Accommodation and practical information about Bucharest

For general information about Bucharest see http://www.romaniatourism.com/bucharest.html

For Bucharest hotels, see http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191501790-bucharest_vacations-I. Note: Recommended for its location, neighboring the Apimondia building, is Hotel Phoenicia. Also the Hotel Erbas and Hotel Caro are nearby.

Money issues

In 2005 Romania has revaluated its currency from the old LEI to the new Ron. 1 Ron = 10.000 Lei. You can easily change limited amounts of cash at the airport. You can do it later as well, in the city. There are lots of ATMs and Exchange offices in Bucharest.

The current exchange rate (April 2008) is 1 € = 3.6 Ron, 1 £ = 4,5 Ron.

Transport from and to the airport

You will arrive at the international airport Otopeni (= Henri Coanda airport). It is recommended to take a taxi straight from the airport. Taxi fares are about 50 RON. At the airport only FLYtaxi is authorised to take passengers. This is a reliable though not the cheapest company. Taxicabs are standing in front of the airport exit.

However, in the arrival hall taxi drivers always are hawking for passengers. We recommend not to make use of these taxis. In case you decide to use these nevertheless, agree on beforehand to pay no more than 15 Euro or 50 Ron. But better to go straight outside and get into one of the waiting FLYtaxis.

From the airport you can also take the bus (783) and reach easily the city centre. The bus station is at Internal Departures, you just will take the lift for the ground floor and to buy a card (5 RON-2 trips). Buses don’t go late at night.

A ride from or to the airport will take half an hour, or depending of the traffic, up to a full hour.

Transport within Bucharest

Bucharest has an excellent and cheap metro system.  The taxis (yellow cabs) may be good and cheap but there are also very expensive ones. Rates are indicated on the taxi door. We suggest you just use taxis from reliable companies like Meridian, Leone, Perozzi, Cristaxi, Comfort and Fly Taxi. If you ask your hotel to order a taxi, you will have one of these.

Bucharest map

For Bucharest maps, see http://travel.yahoo.com/p-map-191501790-map_of_bucharest-i. At the website  http://www.hartionline.ro/buc/harta/judet.html you will find a plan of Bucharest , just choose Strazi (the Romanian word for streets) from the tool bar, type the name of the street and you will find the location.
